In-House Development vs. Packaged Solutions

By Katy Reid Posted July 28, 2021

The majority of today's businesses rely on software, whether for accounting, planning, and scheduling, or customer relationship management. The business issue with software is not in-house creation vs. packaged solutions, but rather user acceptance and uptake. The problem is figuring out how to make the program more intuitive, simple to use, and less intimidating for individuals to embrace and utilize in their daily work routines.
When assessing your business needs, you must ultimately choose between in-house developed software or commercial (out-of-the-box) packaged solutions. The decision between a custom business software and a pre-packaged solution is one that can have far-reaching consequences that are felt years down the road. It would be best if you made this decision with the long-term ramifications in mind. Short-term pain will often lead to long-term gain, while the unenviable opposite can also be true.
